Katie Biggs is a senior at Poland Seminary and also an entrepreneur in the world of accessories. Her business, Spreading Smiles Jewelry, specializes in bracelets, earrings, sterling silver accessories, beaded necklaces and more. She started selling her apparel in March over the Instagram account under the same name as the brand. If you ever want a sneak peak of what she has to offer, she commonly wears her products as a subtle advertisement.
Biggs, 17, has been making jewelry since she was very young. Her desire to make jewelry came about when she saw store-bought jewelry thinking that she “really liked them, but wouldn’t want to pay for something [she] knew [she] could make [herself].”
She then practiced her skill realizing she has a gift for hand-crafted accessories. Around the second semester last year, a now Poland Alum suggested that she start marketing her apparel, an idea she had been considering for awhile. Finally, in March, she made the idea into reality.
Now, Biggs creates seasonal designs appropriate for the time, and she takes into account the compatibility of the jewelry with outfits customers would wear. Though she already has select designs she sells, Biggs also does customizable jewelry as well. She will create earrings, bracelets, and necklaces from client’s references or requests and put her own creative spin on the design.
Not only does she run her own jewelry business independently, Biggs divides her time among family, friends, work, and school. Likewise, she occupies herself with NHS, Spanish NH, art club where she can expand upon her talent, and has made great accomplishments in Track and Field where she throws hammer, weight, and discus.
Biggs hopes to continue her career by majoring in Interior Design and minoring in business at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. From there, she hopes to open a boutique-esque front at some point in her life to create beautiful pieces of jewelry.
