Senior Feature: Matt Matiste
Matt Matiste is a senior here at Poland; you’ve probably seen him in the hall or heard of his soccer skills. Matt has been playing soccer for four years, with two years on the varsity team. This is Matt’s last year on the team, and he has ambition to win. Since the Boys Soccer’s regular season just ended, the team is heading to the Playoffs.
“I think that we can make it to the District Final. We play Girard, and if we win, we play Mooney; I think we can beat Mooney. They are a good team, but we are a good match-up. If we win, then we play in the District Final against… I don’t know who, yet,” said Matiste.
Matiste doesn’t intend to pursue soccer in college, but he still loves the sport. He has a lot of hope for the Soccer team’s future as well.
“Yeah, I think the juniors have a lot of potential; they could do a lot with this program. I think Jacob Hayes, Michael Daley, Collin McBride, and AJ Lisko — all the captains — I think they could play good next year. I think the twins, Skevos and Andreas, are very good too, and I think they could take this team very far next year,” quoted Matiste.
Matiste is also proud of himself and his team this year. The varsity soccer team went 8-3-6 and is looking to see the success that the Girls’ Team is currently having. He sees a lot of potential in the younger students on the team as well.
Matiste said, “I’m happy with my team this year. We were kind of underdogs going into the season. We have a very young team, and we only had two seniors… I feel like all the younger guys put in a lot of hard work in the off-season; I think an 8-3-6 record is very good for the competition we had this year.”
Unfortunately, the Boys Soccer Team has been eliminated in the second round of the playoffs, losing to Mooney with a score of 1-0. But all of us at the Seminarian wish the soccer team a great season next year. We also wish Matiste a great year in school and college next year.
