With Poland Seminary’s Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball games beginning, another extracurricular comes to follow in line with the sport: Jazz Band!
Jazz Band, conducted by Mr. Hvizdos, is another traditional addition to the bands within Poland Seminary, like Concert Band or Marching Band, where students are able to join freely without audition; this musical group performs at many of the Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball games, has their own concert during the spring, and even participates in local jazz festivals.
The instruments that comprise Jazz Band consist of five saxophones, — two altos, two tenors, and one baritone, although this year’s group goes over the conventional limit — four trumpets, four trombones, a piano, a bass and electric guitar, and a drum set alongside auxiliary percussion.
The Jazz Band of the 2023-2024 season is able to commence their arrivals at many of the Basketball games as early as this December, yet January is the most expected arrival date. During these games, the musical group performs several tunes — standard jazz, swing, rock, pop, and even Latin — as each team is practicing beforehand, and then plays the National Anthem; they go on to perform the occasional tune afterwards, and then conclude after the match’s halftime period.
Therefore, expect to see the skillful Jazz Band group in the band section of the Fieldhouse at many of the 2023-2024 Varsity Basketball games, and within other events as 2024 itself commences; the Seminarian wishes the group many flawless performances and much luck!
