This Friday, February 9, a new film Lisa Frankenstein was released just in time for Valentines Day. Including elements of horror, comedy, and romance, the story is set in 1989 and follows the character Lisa (Kathryn Newton) through her troubles of navigating a new life, with an unexpected partner.
The beginning of the movie focuses on Lisa’s recent past. She has experienced a horrific event that has caused her to become more closed off, and misunderstood. Living in a new town, she finds a cemetery where she spends her time, obsessing specifically over the grave of an unmarried man named Frankenstein (Cole Sprouse). One night, after troubles at a party she was dragged to by her step sister, she wishes to be with Frankenstein- and her wish is granted, just not in the way she intended.
Frankenstein rises from the dead, and greets Lisa in a traumatizing way. Yet, she gains interest in the obsessing monster, and attempts to make him seem more alive- which is difficult, as he is missing body parts. Throughout the remainder of the movie, Lisa and Frankenstein set off on an adventure to find Frankenstein a hand, an ear, etc., despite the effects of this on other people.
Watching this movie was a fun surprise, and greatly entertaining. The set was colorfully decorated in an 80’s fashion, incorporating many essential items from the time. Despite the elements of surprise, it was interesting to find out how the events from the beginning of the movie were pulled in throughout.
The portrayal of Frankenstein by Cole Sprouse was slightly reminiscent of Johnny Depp’s Edward Scissorhands, but without any of the kindness in his heart. Even greater a dynamic character, Lisa grew into an extrovert that let her true emotions show. Seeing the relationship between the two grow was comical due to Lisa’s lack of knowledge for Frankenstein’s feelings. While the majority of the movie was not strictly romance, those in search of a romantic movie will not be disappointed by this relationship
Overall, Lisa Frankenstein was a thrilling, exciting movie that caters to a teenage audience. The content provided many laughs and surprised looks throughout the different events. If you are looking for a movie to watch with a friend or by yourself on Valentine’s day- or any time throughout the year- Lisa Frankenstein showcases entertainment for all.
