Poland Seminary High School is hosting a Sweethearts Dance on Saturday, February 24. Due to popular demand by students, this dance is making a comeback. In recent years, there has been no winter dance. The dance will take place in the high school gym. Poland Seminary has their traditional Homecoming in the fall, and Prom in the spring. We interviewed junior student council members who are organizers of the event. The last time the Sweethearts Dance occurred was about 4 years ago.
Lucy Harrell, a junior member, said, “We mentioned it last year and brought it up; this year, we did the vote super early to be able to plan everything out; we did it in November.”
A dance takes a lot of planning and preparation; the members also have to plan if they want food or not.
Harrell also mentioned, “We had to do multiple votes; one of the votes we had to go through was whether we wanted food or not at the actual dance. We voted yes. We also sold about 200 tickets which is a great turnout.”
However, not everyone on the council agreed. Lucienne Hopps was a supporter of the vote and thought it would be a good experience for the students.
“We just did majority rule and most of us voted yes, and all of us actually have to attend the dance regardless,” said Hopps, “I really think this will be fun for everyone.”
Not only do they have to organize food and themes, they have to have a DJ. They decided on DJ Puff who is a DJ from Youngstown and is well known.
“I have heard he is really good so I am excited, and I think that everyone there will like it. All of Student Council worked really hard on this so we hope people will stay and enjoy themselves,” said Hopps.
Student council has high expectations since they are running it completely and organizing the whole dance as students. They also plan to continue this as an annual event if all goes well.
The dance will be from 6-9 in the PE gym.
