The Gathering Leaves Literary Magazine provides students with the opportunity to submit their creative writing pieces with the possibility of having their poems or short stories published. Any student photographer may also submit their nature photographs for possible inclusion in the magazine. The club is open to all students grades 9-12. Club members decide on which submissions will be published in the yearly magazine. Submissions are opened in the fall, and are currently open until March 22. Once constructed, the magazine is published online and a limited number of copies are printed and available to students at the end of each school year.
Senior Maddie Garwood is in her fourth year of working as a club member, and explains that “it’s a good outlet to read and write creatively and think critically… it’s a small but worthwhile experience.”
This school year, the club not only has returning members but new students as well. Freshman Jasmeet Kaur explains that the club is “interesting to be a part of” and that it is “nice to meet new people” through the club.
Many poetry submissions are required by teachers for English class assignments, but students are also encouraged to submit work they create in their personal time. Overall, the hopes for the magazine are to present a diverse selection of creative writing to students and parents. It is an exciting opportunity that differs from the usual formal writing in school. Again, students can submit their creative writing works until March 22 to this email address: [email protected]. Once the submissions have been chosen and organized, the 2024 literary magazine will be shared.
