On May 17, immediately following the end of the school day, there was an event hosted by the PSHS Science Club and several PSHS student-musicians: Science Jam!
Science Jam is an annual event that consists of the many studies and projects that the PSHS Science Club, run by Mrs. Queen, Mr. Kline, and Mrs. McGee, conduct over the school year. Along with the educational values, a group of PSHS student-musicians get together—this year with Mr. Kline, who sang!—to learn and play music on their respective instruments that they had set up in the area. These students were seniors Parker Gromen and Jason Vuksanovich, and then Cole Lewis, Kate Blumel, and Nathan Hupp.
This year, the event was located in the corridor near the auditorium and library, and consisted of these scientific collections, concepts, and projects on different tables: specimens like plants and aquatic creatures jarred and labeled with scientific terminology, varied anatomical studies and diagrams with the new “Hugh Man” bodily model, microscopy with different subjects like plant leaves and water to be studied under a microscope, a 3D-printing machine that printed out mini guitar picks for students to take, and a study of motion with a ping-pong ball launcher.
Mentioning the student-musicians again, said students performed “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears, “Accidentally in Love” by Counting Crows, and “You Give Love a Bad Name” by Bon Jovi. After these songs, Liam Burk, a senior, sang a different song with the group, and Ava Day, a freshman, volunteered to play “golden hour” by JVKE on the set-up keyboard by herself. The Science Jam participants all got to enjoy the music, with some getting up to record footage, dance along, or participate in other ways.
Overall, Science Jam was an easygoing, fun, and successful event of scientific and musical experimentation. We wish the PSHS Science Club and the student-musicians the best of luck in their future endeavors!
