The month of October is the prime for all of the fall sports. October is when athletes are winding down their season and starting to enter the playoffs. Many athletes also perform their best this time of year. Senior Tight End, Oliver McCully is October’s athlete of the month!
Oliver has been playing football for Poland every since he moved here. It definitely shows by the way he plays.
McCully believes that the reason for his success is due to constant practicing and hard work. He also has a great team to help him achieve his goals.
McCully, like every athlete, has a drive for why they play. McCully said, “The thing that motivates me to play better is revenge. Playing a team that beat us the year prior or even earlier in the season drives my effort through the roof.”
McCully is a member of the Big 22, which is a group of the best football players from around the valley. To be a member of this group takes a ton of effort and dedication. There are hundreds to thousands of football players from around the valley. To be the top 22 in the area is definitely a very tough title to receive.
To be one of the best, you also need to keep your body healthy. McCully has a process to keep his body in peak condition.
“I keep my body healthy with lots of rest and stretching, a calorie surplus mixed with planned hydration, and icing when needed,” said McCully.
The Poland Varsity team took many big hits this year due to all of the past seniors that went off to college. McCully took on a leadership position and is a key factor to why Poland is performing at the level they are on now.
After the football season is over, McCully will be suiting up for the basketball season.
We wish Oliver a great rest of the football season and a wonderful basketball season to come!
