The annual College Credit Plus informational meeting was held recently on Thursday, December 12 at 6pm in the high school auditorium. Guidance counselors Mr. Vagas, Mr. Morocco, and Mrs. Calderon, as well as a guest speaker from YSU, spoke on what College Credit Plus, or CCP, is and how you can qualify. If you couldn’t make it, here’s what you missed!
General Information
Being a CCP student means that you are both a high school student and college student at the same time. You are taking higher education classes before you officially graduate with a high school diploma. All students from grades 7-12 are welcome to the program if they meet the requirements or admission standards for the university. Students in grades 7-10 who want to participate must do it online or on the college campus because the courses taught within the high school need prerequisite courses. All tuition, fees, and books will be paid for by the school. Parents are responsible for transportation costs, parking fees/fines, and reimbursements for withdrawn or failed classes.
What Classes are Offered?
PSHS offers classes from Kent State and YSU currently. Students can take whatever classes from these colleges they want as long as they qualify for them. The limit for semester classes each year is 30 hours and 120 hours throughout the student’s high school education before they get charged for the additional hours or class fees.
YSU classes offered in person at PSHS include Advanced Chem, Calc, AP Calc, Advanced PreCalc, Physical Geology, STEM Physics, Advanced Government, Intro to Criminal Justice, Anatomy 1 and 2, and AP Bio.
Kent state classes offered at PSHS include CCP English 12 (Major Modern Writers and Writing I).
All of these courses can be transferred to other in-state public universities and most private Ohio universities in case you don’t want to attend YSU or Kent.
Qualifications
You can take the ACT or SAT placement test and submit a qualifying score, as well as having a qualifying GPA. You can register to take the ACT by April 5, 2025 or the SAT by March 8, 2025. Check with guidance to confirm that your stats qualify. You must also complete the Intent to Participate form by April 1, 2025. It has been emailed out by guidance and is on the school website in the Guidance Department under the College Credit Plus section. If you do not complete this form, you will be disqualified from participating until the next school year.
Students interested can attend application days at PSHS for YSU and Kent State for important information and paperwork. YSU Application Day is January 31, 2025 and the Kent State Application Day is February 4th, 2025.
While this is a general overview of what was discussed at the CCP meeting, you can find more information by contacting guidance or by looking through the resources emailed to all students on FinalForms!
