This season the Lady Bulldogs have played 21 games, and gathered a record of 11-10. They are 6-5 in the conference, and currently occupy second place in the NE8 standings. In their most recent win, they beat South Range by a margin of seven points. Both teams played extraordinary defense in this game and held each other to under 35 points each.
On offense Senior, Sophia Generalovich led the team with 10 points, and Seniors, Kate, and Lucy Harrell contributed 7 each. This core group of experienced Seniors has played a key role in the success of the team’s offense this year, and in their recent win, against South Range, they combined for 70% of the teams total points.
This trio is supported by a cast of many talented athletes, but recently Freshman Ava Stabi has stood out. In her latest game she showcased her defensive talent, and scored seven points matching that of Generalovich. This game also proved well for Lucy Harrell as she racked up 15 points.
Later this week the team will face off against the 13-8 Fairview Warriors. Fairview is known to hold their opponents off with a strong defense whilst also providing crucial offensive plays. Poland’s defensive play will be a good match for this as they have the defensive ability to hold the Warriors score, and the offensive skill to run up their own.
When I talked to head coach Nick Blanch he told me that the team is “… a strong group of athletes with a commitment to growth.”
This is proven by the team’s effort, and dedication every week as well as their resilience. In the next few weeks, this attitude will prove important, for the team will likely undergo many trials and tribulations as the playoffs ensue. As long as they maintain this perspective, there is no doubt they have the ability to exceed all expectations.
