Recently, the PSHS Criminal Justice class went on a field trip to the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center, including both the detention center and court, as well as the Mahoning County Justice Center and the Poland Township Administration Building to have a discussion with Poland Chief Greg Wilson. The students got to tour the jail and see the inmates do their daily tasks.
Mr. Rowe, the Criminal Justice teacher, chaperoned the field trip and was interviewed.
He said, “I felt the students got a realistic look at corrections and got some experience with many of the issues facing the corrections system.”
When asked how this field trip connected to the lessons taught in the Criminal Justice class, Rowe answered, “We had just finished studying corrections in class and had just started juvenile justice, so the experience really worked well with our curriculum.”
Overall, the field trip seemed to be a success with both teaching and engaging the students in the real world realities of the criminal justice system.
