A New Chess Club Joins PSHS!
Poland Seminary opened back in 1909, and this is the first year it has ever had a chess club. The chess club was founded by Sean Zura and Rowan Downie, and Co-founded by a few of their friends, and the Club Advisor is Mr. Vagas from the Guidance Department.
In an interview with President and Founder Sean Zura, Zura reveals details and his aspirations about the club that him and his friends founded.
In a question regarding why he decided to make the club, Zura responded, “ My friends and I have been planning to create a club since Sophomore year. We also thought a chess club would fit in with our school.”
But one problem faced the founders after they decided to make it. How is the club going to stay alive after graduation? All of the founders are seniors, and after their graduation, they would have nobody to run the club.
“We invited everyone to join the club, not just people in our own grade. So we hope they can join back next year, and we also hope our advisor Mr. Vagas keeps the club going,” said Zura.
Chess is a difficult game that takes time to learn; this is how Sean learned how to play.
“I learned to play chess on chess.com. I would play chess online with other people in my study halls, and my skill began to go up after that.”
If you would like to join chess club, the meetings are every Thursday. If you do join, you need to attend one meeting per month for it to count.
We wish the chess club a bright future, and we hope that the club can stay alive for years to come.
