How to Get to Know Yourself Better

If you’ve ever felt misunderstood, you can now rest-assured that there are others like you. After taking a 10-minute personality test, I discovered that there are 16 personality types that we may fall into, and I fell into the INFP-T category. Surprisingly, it nailed my personality to a tee, and the key to that was answering the questions as honestly as possible, even if there was a little shame involved.

I was a little skeptical when reading the results at first, but as I carried on, I began to notice more aspects of myself that I didn’t even realize I had.

In short, INFP-T stands for introversion, intuition, feeling, perception, and turbulence.

After the test is complete, they will provide a brief summary of 5 things: mind, energy, nature, tactics, and identity. Mind is the trait that determines how you act in your environment, Energy is how you direct your mental energy, Nature is how we make decisions and cope with emotions, Tactics reflects planning/work approach and decision making, and Identity shows how confident we are in our abilities and decisions.

I then discovered that I am 67% introverted and 70% intuitive. 60% of my personality gravitates toward feeling rather than thinking when it comes to decision-making, and I am 76% prospecting rather than judging. Lastly, I am 54% turbulent. Only 4% of the population has this personality, and to be completely honest, that fact doesn’t surprise me.

INFP’s are the mediator types. They try to search for the good in the worst situations. When it comes to self-improvement, INFP’s are on a continuous journey to do so, which can make them become perfectionists.

They are able to communicate well and gifted when it comes to self-expression. Often times, they use this ability in creative works, such as writing novels and poetry. In fact, William Shakespeare and J.R. Tolkien had INFP personalities, which is what aided them in becoming successful authors.

Their gift for communication also aids them in learning a second (or even a third) language. I found this interesting because my two biggest hobbies are writing and studying Italian.

On the flipside, we “listen to many but talk to few”, according to my results.

Like all personalities, we INFP’s have our strengths and weaknesses. While we seek harmony, have open minds, are passionate and creative, and dedicated and hard-working, we also take things personally, are impractical, too idealistic, and difficult to get to know due to our tendency to be private and self-reserved. We mediators are “so focused on the big picture that [we] forget the forest is made of individual trees”.

With an intent to become an Italian professor in the future, I was surprised when “professor” was apart of the ideal career options for INFP’s.
