On February 9, Poland High School Student Council came together to organize a Sweethearts Dance for the high school students. This dance included a lot of fun and intriguing pieces such as a cotton candy machine, a photobooth, corn hole, a DJ, etc. The dance seemed to be successful from a viewers point of view, but we wanted to get some first hand opinions on how the students’ experiences were.
Student council always works very hard to organize these events for Poland Seminary High School, but they like to have feedback from their peers, so they can have an idea on what to improve on the following year.
Freshman Brooke Hallquist felt that “…the school could’ve made the dance more efficient and enjoyable by having better music, some songs weren’t great.”
However, her favorite part was “taking pictures at the photo booth and being with friends.”
Student Council Representative Devin Lucas said, “I don’t think they need to add anything to it. It seemed like it was enough. It was better than homecoming, like way better. The food was good and the photo booth was sweet. The only thing I think they could add is maybe professional photos, but that’s going above and beyond.”
He said that his favorite part was “ … was definitely the photo booth. Photos are sweet.”
Every year, the student council has to decide whether or not they want the dance to happen that year. A majority of the students say yes and they look forward to this dance for many weeks.
In fact, Student Council Representative Bella DiPasqua said, “I think the student council should continue to have sweethearts every year. It’s a really fun experience, and in my opinion, better than homecoming. There is so much to do at the dance, and it’s an opportunity for you to get dressed up with your friends.”
In addition to that, Freshman Student Council Representative Devin Lucas said, “Yes, definitely a hundred percent. Having sweethearts every year allows us to come together as a student group and enjoy each other’s company and get to know each other. It just allows us to have fun. It’s like a big gift together.”
Finally, we asked students if they prefer going with friends or taking a date.
Bella DiPasqua said, “I prefer going to the dances with my friends. In my opinion, a date adds a lot of stress. I would much rather jump around and dance with my friends while not worrying if my hair is messed up or not.”
However, Brooke Hallquist felt differently about it, and she said “taking a date, but I think it’s fun either way.”
Overall, this dance seemed to be very successful with little improvements needed to be made. Students seemed to really enjoy this dance and look forward to it every year.
