Recently, Poland Seminary High school Spanish Club took on the task of hosting their annual Trunk Or Treat. Students came together to decorate the trunks of their cars and gave out candy to the children of the community. A Spanish teacher at Poland, Ms. Latronica, orchestrated and made Trunk or Treat possible. After speaking with her and two students who participated, we have learned more about the purpose of Trunk or Treat.
Latronica tells us that this event makes money for the club through donations. The money the Spanish Club raised goes to student scholarships.
The teachers choose students of Poland’s graduating class who are majoring or minoring in Spanish for their college education.
For the preparation, Ms Latronica starts weeks in advance.
Many things fall on her shoulders such as “planning the number of cars and how many people are needed for positions such as collecting donations, serving hot chocolate or directing traffic.”
This year, we had 40 cars decorated and over 350 kids came to trick or treat!
Ms Latronica says she is very happy with the turn out and is “very proud of the Poland Spanish Club and all the hard work they put into this event!”
We then spoke to two students who decorated cars. Sophomore, Mckenna Daley, and senior, Alexa James, both claim that it was a success!
Out of 40 cars, we asked James for her favorite.
Jam said she thought the “pirate ship was cute and creative” and really stood out to her.
James’ car was themed after Charlie Brown’s Great Pumpkin movie, and she “found that set up was simple.”
Daley told us she could not pick a favorite. She stated that “there was definitely a lot of variety with the cars” and that everyone was very imaginative!
Her friends and herself decorated their car with a zoo theme; the kids loved it!
Despite the children outnumbering the cars within the first hour, the students kept up.
Daley and her group said everyone was very pleased with how their evening went and that “she only heard good things from parents.”
Overall, Poland’s Annual Trunk or Treat was a success! Ms Latronica and other teachers led the Spanish Club to success to give back to the senior class while also hosting a family fun event for the town!
