March Madness is finally underway. As the games started, we asked people around our school who they thought would win the national championship. There were 22 votes, and 5 of them were for Arizona to win the whole thing.
The games have already started, and there have been multiple upset picks that have crushed some people’s brackets. To kickoff March Madness, Ohio State played TCU in a nine seed vs eight seed game. The majority of the people picked Ohio State to win this game as a -2.5 favorite.
Ultimately, the Buckeyes lost the game off of a last second bucket to put them ahead as TCU advanced to the second round, but they ended up losing to Duke in the close first half but ended up losing by 23. Duke advanced to the next round.
Another game that a lot of people had was the Louisville vs South Florida game. Louisville was the 6th seed and South Florida was the 11th seed. Louisville was the favorite going into the game, but South Florida was coming off an eleven-game win streak, causing more people to upset them in their brackets.
South Florida would end up losing 83-79 in a game they trailed the entire game, with multiple opportunities to win, but ended up losing. Louisville also lost in the second round to Michigan State 77-69.
One Major upset of the first round was High Point beating the Wisconsin Badgers, who were coming off a great run in the Big Ten tournament. Ultimately, they ended up losing within the final second to a High Point team that was very under the radar in terms of people picking them to win that game.
High Point would play the four-seeded Arkansas Razorbacks, and it ended up losing 94-88, ending their run early. The last real big upset that just recently happened was when the ninth-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes beat the number 1-seeded Florida Gators in a March Madness classic.
Out of our vote from the people that we asked, two people picked Florida to win the whole thing, and this is the first time Iowa has advanced to the sweet sixteen since 1999, showing how big this pick really was for all of the brackets.
Overall, Arizona was the most picked team of the 22 people who had voted on the teams, as they were one of the three favorites to win the national championship. Arizona plays Arkansas on Thursday, March 26th, to advance to the elite eight, as this is a very anticipated match up.
