Requirements go as stated: students have a selection of seven novels, both fiction and nonfiction, to read and then pass comprehension checks regarding each book.
In the junior high, these tests are created by English teacher Mrs. Lori Moncilovich, who advises Poland Seminary High School’s organization for English Festival (Grades 7-9). After having read and passed the exam per book, students are accepted for the one day event. Mrs. Smith advises the grades 10-12 group of students.
Each of the three days are dedicated to a group of schools at a time, high school students first and junior high following. Throughout the three days, all activities, lectures, and authors attending will remain the same per day, only different grade levels and schools will change.
Moncilovich has explained the activities offered by the English Festivals, stating “there’s writing games, poetry classes, prose workshops, impromptu writing, writing labs and illustrating characters with games” and more. Many of these experiences have students meeting other students from schools in the area.
These classes and workshops are open and scheduled for all students attending, however, outside of these activities, students are taken around YSU campus for lunch that they are instructed to bring money for. On campus, there are many small coffee shops, Chick fil a, Chipotle, Dunkin’ Donuts, and more. It is important to note that construction has occurred on campus recently and has certain buildings temporarily closed.
The YSU English Festival offers many educational and recreational opportunities, and hopes to provide students with literary and memorable experiences.
